Restore a Healthy Smile with Dental Crowns
Crowns are recommended at Hogan Family Dental when:
- a tooth has a large filling and is at risk for further cracking or fracturing
- cracks exist in your tooth and Dr. Eric Hogan wants to avoid further progression of the fracture
- a root canal has been performed and the tooth needs additional support to prevent fracture
- a tooth shows signs of excessive wear due to oral habits and/or bruxism
- a new cavity has formed on your tooth around an old restoration or in a new location
- to complete a dental implant with a restoration that mimics natural teeth
- to cover a discolored tooth; discoloration frequently occurs if a tooth has had nerve damage in the past or if a patient has taken medications such as tetracycline that caused discoloration
“I was well-informed about my treatment options and given ample time to choose the best treatment for me.” – Carla B., Miles City
Procedure for a Crown Preparation
When Dr. Eric Hogan prepares your tooth for a crown, you can expect to be in our office for approximately 90 minutes. Dr. Eric and his assistant will work together to prepare the tooth by removing the outer layers of the tooth, decay, and any existing restorative materials that need to be replaced. An impression or a digital scan will be taken to create your customized porcelain crown. The ideal color shade will be selected. A custom temporary crown will be created by one of our dental assistants to protect your teeth and provide comfort until your permanent crown is cemented.
You may receive your crown the same day or you may need to return for an additional appointment to permanently cement the crown in place. This second appointment is usually anesthetic-free and lasts about 20-30 minutes.
Crown Options
Many factors will be considered when designing your crown including your preferences, your bite pattern, cost, esthetics, and your future dental goals. Dr. Eric Hogan will discuss options with you. The specialists at our in-house or commercial laboratories create a variety of customized crowns:
- All porcelain crowns
- Porcelain fused to metal crowns
- Full gold crowns

Do You Have a Metal Allergy?
Dr. Eric Hogan’s ultimate goal is to create a restoration that looks and feels similar to your natural teeth. At times, Dr. Eric Hogan recommends a crown that has a noble-metal substructure. Each treatment recommendation is made with special care to provide you the best possible treatment for your tooth/teeth and with consideration for any metal allergies you may have.
